Work From Home: The Basics

Well, here we are. We’ve entered the first full month of quarantine.

While we are all #TogetherAlone, some of us have children or older parents to tend to, and if we’re lucky, we still have work to do.

Here at Gaslight we are grateful to already have a system in place for remote work since that’s part of how we have always operated. For the many millions of people who were used to going into the office to get work done, this is a whole new world.

We’ve compiled some of the things we do to work well from home. Everyone’s different, see what works for you. No matter what your situation - this is a strange time and is undoubtedly adding stress and confusion to your life. We are practicing being gentle with ourselves while figuring out what our new (temporary) normal is.

Some tips for focusing while working from home:

#WFH life has its own set of challenges. While it’s nice to have your bed a few paces away, it’s also tempting to take those paces and take a “quick” nap. We’ve got some ideas for you.

1. Music. Rather than skipping around between different artists and playlists, try listening to some energetic focus tunes or the sweet sounds of the rain or try my personal favorite.

2. Ever heard of the Pomodoro Technique? It’s a great way to jump into work without feeling overwhelmed with all that needs to get done. All you have to think about is the first task at hand and set a timer and know that in a swift 25 minutes you get a break.

3. Lastly, to keep track of progress we use Trello. It’s free and keeps things organized. Even if you have other modes of organization, it’s helpful sometimes to get really granular with to-do lists. More boxes to check off. More satisfaction to be had.

It’s pandemic-o-clock for the foreseeable future. Feel free to reach out if you or your business could use a hand adapting to the topsy-turvy new reality. We’re here to help.
